3rd June 2012

The maintenance party on the 3rd of June has been postponed due to a clash with the new date for the Worcester Hasler.

22nd April 2012

A nasty wet windy day for the Anker Valley Hasler Races and a well done has to be extended to all of whom took part or supported.  Congratulations to Judith Leaper (pictured) for coming second in the Div 9 race; she has been promoted to Div 8. The other 'medal'  winners were Taylor Maggs, first in a bruising (literally) U12F race and Tom Lusty and Charles Fleeson (ANK. V.) second in the Div 3 K2 race.

14th April 2012

On Saturday 21 members of the club participated in a paddle along the River Severn from Bridgnorth to Bewdley, a distance of 14 miles. The group, ranging in age from 12 to 68, set off in a variety of boats including canadian canoes, touring and white water kayaks. During the trip 4 members were assessed for their 2 Star Canoe and Kayak Award.   Congratulations to Matt Austin, Tom Bache, James Downey and Lee Riley all of whom passed.

The
BCU National Canoe Sprint Racing Regatta 14th April saw only three Solihull paddlers take part.  Robert Oliver (pictured) won his heat in the K-Para Canoeing K1 - 200m and, as such, earned himself a place in the World Paracanoe Sprint Championships at Poznan which are due to be held in May 2012. A fantastic result.  Tom Lusty got a promotion to the Boys A Team on the day but this failed to be confirmed on the official results. And finally, Oliver Cook broke his 500m PB by 19 seconds!

6th - 9th April 2012

The Annual Devizes to Westminster Race (125 miles long and 77 portages) has been completed by two crews from Solihull School, whom trained with the club, in the Junior K2 section. Out of the 84 competitors in their class Nicholas Clay and Michael Fancott clocked a time of 23:50:59 and took 45th place whilst their colleagues Conor Maher and Thomas Johnson took 24:47:41 and came 65th.  Congratulations to both them and the unsung heroes - their support crews; a great deal was achieved in a relatively short time through the depths of winter.  Remember boys; now you have a trump card to pull when talking to other canoeists!

1st April 2012

What a superb performance was put in by all the Solihull paddlers in the first Hasler Race of 2012.   There really were too many star performances to mention them all.  But top of the list must come Oliver Cook  who, on his first outing as a Div. 9 paddler , won his race in such style that he was promoted to Div. 7.  Winning style was also demonstrated by Joe Pittaway (pictured - overtaking Geoff and Orlando) in Div 5, Taylor Maggs (who, although racing as an U12 female, beat all the other Lightning classes in a combined start) and Ben Aston in the Lightning classes.  Second places were achieved by Torin Elmhirst in Div. 7, James Leaper and Fraser Doshi-Keeble in the K2 Div. 7, and Ellicia Perry and her partner in the K2 Div. 9 class.  Tom Lusty came in third at the highly competitive Div. 2 ranking.  And finally Mark Wevill is on course to win 'Sub-marine of the Year' award with an impressive 6 outings - but he still finished the course!

21st March 2012

Congratulations to Anne and Peter on their Golden Wedding Anniversary (17th March).  Not only have they committed so much to each other but, together, they have committed so much to the club.  They are to be seen at the club sometimes as much as three times a week doing the invaluable work that is required, by someone, to keep the club and paddlers in good shape.  A small collection was arranged and a garden bench a gold coffee cups were given as presents.

Peter and Anne's response:

" We want to thank you all for your gifts celebrating our golden wedding and all of your kind words.  Solihull Canoe Club has been a significant feature of 25 of those 50 years and we have derived great pleasure from introducing and encouraging many paddlers to the sport which we have enjoyed for so long and celebrating the performances of all of our racing paddlers particularly those who have gone on to represent our country in Marathon and Wild Water Racing."

Club Awards for 2011

The club has once again made its annual awards however this year the competition was so great that medals were issued to runners up whom, it was felt, were almost as worthy as the winners.  Novice Paddler of the year went to Taylor Maggs due to her stunning entrance into the sport and her achieving second place in the Geoff. Sanders U12 Girls Lightning class at the national finals.  Runners up were James Leaper and Fraser Keeble for their rapid promotion in the K2.  Paddler of the Year went to Mark Wevill who, in his first year, gained the status of a Div 5 paddler.  There were two runner ups one was Joe Pittaway who is also a young Div 5 paddler but his attitude and general bon ami singled him out as a good egg and the other was Tom Lusty for also being a good egg and achieving Div 2 and a Boys Sprint B place.  The President's Trophy was awarded to Mark Bache in recognition of the work he has put in to the touring activities of the club.  Pictured from left to right Fraser, Joe, Mark B., James, Taylor and Mark W.

Pool Sessions 2012

Pool sessions have now bee arranged for 2012.  The sessions will be held at Solihull School on Saturday 18th February and Sunday the 18th March.  Both will start at 15:00hrs with boat washing followed by the pool 'bit' between 15:30 and 17:00hrs.

15th January

Anker Valley held the second of the Midland's Duathlon series after the hosting club had gamely cleared the course of ice which gives an indication of the prevailing temperature.  Solihull submitted only a small team and all of them did extremely well.  Torin Elmhirst and Fraser Keeble, respectively, came 1st and 3rd in the Div 7-9 race, Taylor Maggs (pictured) came first in the U12 Girls, Ben Ashton 3rd in the U12 Boys and Rhys Tippings came 4th in the U10 Boys.  Well braved and well done to all the participants and the supporters.

2nd October 2011

The Hasler Finals were held in Bedford on an unseasonable hot day which made the event all the more pleasant; especially for the supporters!   It was for the juniors to show the seniors how to compete successfully.  The best results went to the youngest members who were racing in the Lightning classes.  Taylor Maggs came in second place in the U10F race and Oliver Cook also came second in the U12M race (pictured).  Ben Aston just missed out on the medals with a fourth place in the U10M.  Superb results for national competitions.  James Leaper/Fraser Keeble and Mark Wevill came 7th in their respective races (K2 Div. 8 and K1 Div. 6). Mark has been promoted to Div 5 as a result of this race result - well done.  The full results may be viewed on:

19th September 2011

The first race of the canoeing calendar was held at Soar Valley. The club came in overall 4th place for the seniors' event and first in the Lightning event by a considerable margin. Well done all participants and helpers. Taylor Maggs came in first as was to be expected, she was the only entrant in the U10F class, yet she recorded a time that would have put her in equal first place for all the Lightning classes.  Ellicia Perry came in third place in the U12F class.  Tom Lusty was 4th in the Div 3 K1 race.  In the doubles Andy Cook and Orlando Elmhirst (pictured) took first place in the Div 7 race and have subsequently been promoted to Div 6 (out go the BAs and in come the 13km and portages). And finally, Fraser Keeble and James Leaper took third place in the Div 8 race.

14th August 2011

Ironbridge provided its usual spills and thrills at Jacks  Field however all the Solihull paddlers made it through this part of the course unscathed.  The last race of the season brought a somewhat mixed bag of results.  The highlights of which were Joe Pittaway (pictured) who has been promoted to Div 5 as a result of coming 2nd in the Div 6 race.  Fraser Keeble also came second in the Div 9 race being the only Div 8 competitor.  Ben Aston was first in the U10M and Olivia Lusty was third in the U12F.  Torin Elmhirst appears to be in pole position for Sub-mariner of the Year Award after falling in 4 times when racing up a division in the Div 6 race;.however he did negotiate the rapids without a spill.

Congratulations to Matt Stephenson and Alison Deykin both of whom put in outstanding performances in the World Quadrathlon Championship's in the Czech Republic.  Matt came in first place, for his age group, and overall 7th place for the championship.  Alison, after an altercation with a street sign in the cycling section of the event, achieved an overall 3rd place in the ladies event.  For more details on the event and the British Quadrathlon association please follow the link:

Solihull paddlers went out of the region to participate in the Trentham Hasslers.  One promotion was secured at this meeting for our paddlers and that was Dan Tudor to Division 6 – well done!  Taylor Maggs came in first place in a one horse race in the U10Female class but with a time that would have won her first place in the U12Female event.  She later paired up with Ellicia Perry where they came first in the Hody U12 event.  Rhys Tippings also came in first in the U10Male event. And finally, Tom ‘swimming’ Lusty came second in Div 3 whilst living up to his adopted name.

19th June 2011

At Shropshire Paddlesport Marathon a new name made an appearance on the water for Solihull and that was Mark Wevill.  Mark has only recently taken up the sport and yet came in a decent second place in the Div 7 K1 race.  Other successes were Tom Lusty who came first, of two, in the Div 3, Oliver Cook took first place as the only competitor in the U12 Lightning having previous won the U12 K2 with Lauren Homewood (from Shropshire).  In a similar vein Ben Aston won the U10 boys Lightning and then joined Taylor Maggs to win the U10 K2 race.  Torin Elmhirst and Dan Tudor won their Div 7 K2 race easily with over 2 minutes to spare. And finally, to show that canoeing is not all brawn, Joe Pittaway gave a rare and heartfelt performance in the use of vernacular English as he dropped his boat on the first portage which, ultimately, caused him to retire (due to dropping the boat, not the use of the language!) from a leading position.

23rd/24th April 2011

Congratulations to Lee Hodgkinson and Richard Billson who successfully completed the Devizes to Westminster non-stop race this week-end. The race which is reputed to be the longest no-stop canoe race in the world is over 125 mile and usually contains 79 portages. Lee and Richard went for an 80 portage version with the extra-long one thrown in at Chelsea Bridge!

21st April 2011

The club has now achieved the Clubmark status. The BCU development officer has only to fill out all the relevant paperwork and recommend the club for its accreditation certificate. The Clubmark status has only been possible due to the exteremly hard work that has been put in by both David Rimmington (club secretary) and Peter Jones (club president). It has been a hard slog of which, most of us, have been unaware; so we are greatly indebted to these two club stalwarts.

Midland's Duathlons 2010/11

Although the club did not win the Claremont Cup (we woz robbed?) we did win the Junior Team Award. Individuals in the squad put in some fine performances and all the regulars achieved overall positions of either first or second place. So well done to them and also to the intermittent team members. Pictured below, from left to right, are Tom Lusty (Div 1-3 winner), Torin Elmhirst (Div 7-9 winner), Dan Tudor (Div 7-9 second place) and Ben Aston (Junior winner).
